Political prisoners were liberated; political parties were organized; basic freedoms were reinstated; and the secret police was abolished. By November I, the revolution seemed to have succeeded. On November 4, however, the Soviet army started an attack aimed at crushing the revolution. Within a few weeks, the Russians achieved their goal, although passive resistance against them continued much longer. Nagy was taken prisoner and later executed.
